New Mexicans Push National Change for Chimpanzees

Thank Senator Udall for Cosponsoring the
Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act!

On Thursday, December 15th, the long awaited independent report from the Institute of Medicine “Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research: Assessing the Necessity” was released.

Read about the news:
New York Times: Use of Chimps Halted in New U.S.-Funded Research
NPR: Biomedical Research Using Chimps Should Be Curtailed
Bloomberg: Chimpanzee Use in Research Should Be Restricted, Panel Says

Following the IOM report, Senators Bingaman and Udall wrote to the NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins urging prompt adoption of the IOM's new recommendations. The senators also told Dr. Collins they hoped that, in light of the new report, the chimpanzees in Alamogordo would be excluded from further testing.

After the report’s release, Senator Tom Udall signed on as a cosponsor of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. The legislation would end the use of chimps in invasive testing over three years and save taxpayers $30 million/year.

Thank you to everyone who has written, called, emailed, and attended meetings to make this happen! The Institute of Medicine (IOM) study was requested by Senators Tom Udall (D-NM), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), and Tom Harkin (D-IA) in December 2010 after public outcry over plans to move 200 chimpanzees from New Mexico to a Texas lab for further testing.

Thank you, Senator Udall!
