Straw Fund & Blanket Drive keep animals warm this winter
APNM’s Equine Protection Program works to help all New Mexico horses, donkeys, and mules in need of food, shelter, homes and medical care. Through administering the Equine Protection Fund in collaboration with New Mexico Community Foundation, APNM provides feed for horses (whose owners have lost a job or had a medical emergency within the past 6 months) through the Emergency Feed Assistance program. Medical expenses and costs for humanely euthanizing suffering equines are provided through the Trail's End program.

This October,
Barn Dogs Equine Supply at the La Tienda shopping center of Eldorado proudly agreed to carry
Equine Protection Program t-shirts. These high-quality, horse-themed shirts cost $15.00 and all of the proceeds go to the Equine Protection Program. The shirts are also available for purchase on the APNM website.
Barn Dogs is also sponsoring a
horse blanket drive, collecting good condition coverings to be picked up by horse owners in need. A blanketed horse uses fewer calories to stay warm, stretching food supplies. If you have blankets in your barn or garage, you may drop them off at Barn Dogs. We can use any size blanket in good condition and freshly laundered.

He’s My Hero, by New Mexico artist Barbara Meikle, depicts Bindy, winner of the Animal Award at APNM’s 2011 Milagro Awards. Prints, available from the artist, benefit Animal Protection of New Mexico.

Last month, APNM honored heroes for animals at our 2011 Milagro Awards. The winner of the Animal Award, a life-saving miniature donkey named
Bindy, was immortalized by artist Barbara Meikle in
He’s My Hero, a phenomenal oil-on-canvass painting. Giclee prints of the painting are now
available from the artist with part of the proceeds benefitting our animal welfare programs.
Similar to the Blanket Drive but benefitting all types of animals, the
Straw Fund—a new partnership between APNM and Bernalillo Co. Animal Care Services—is now collecting donations to buy straw as insulation and bedding for the cold winter months. For the first year ever, the county animal control officers will be proactively distributing the straw to families with animals and instructing in proper cold weather care. At only $6 per bale, any amount contributed will go a long way to keeping outside animals healthy and cozy; please consider visiting our
donation page and designating your contribution as “Straw Fund”.
There are many other ways that you can help. If you know of someone who would qualify for feed or veterinary assistance, there are application forms at
EquineProtectionFund.org. You can also donate feed, materials and time via the Equine Fund Volunteer Network; find out all the ways you can help at the network’s
online survey.
