Valle Escondido, NM— Kathy and Ed Delucas let their German Shepherds, Thor and Mercedes, out into their yard on June 26, as they did every day. They soon noticed that the dogs were eating something. Upon investigation, they saw that it was cooked meat. The meat, as it turned out, was laced with poison and had been thrown into the dogs’ yard. Both dogs had ingested the meat and were taken to the nearby veterinary clinic. Despite the best efforts of the veterinarian, the male dog Thor died at the clinic. Mercedes was luckier and survived. The family was devastated as they considered both dogs their ‘children.’ A neighbor’s dog was also poisoned, but survived.
The Delucases suspect that this act of extreme animal cruelty was a form of retribution for some difficult decisions that Kathy Delucas made in her role as the Neighborhood Association President. Because the crime may have been committed by a person or persons in the local community, the family issued a reward of $4,500 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator(s). APNM will match the reward with an additional $4,500. Intentional animal cruelty in New Mexico is a fourth degree felony.
APNM’s mission is to advocate the rights of animals by effecting systemic change, resulting in the humane treatment of all animals.
