K.C. and Roswell, victims of abuse now rehabilitating in a new home, were the recipients of feed assistance in February. Equine Protection Fund is proud to offer assistance to prevent another difficult uprooting for them and two others adopted by a compassionate New Mexican.

One year ago this month, APNM and the Equine Protection Fund launched the Emergency Feed Assistance program, the first of several
programs for needy horses, donkeys, and mules. Watch a video featuring early feed assistance recipients
here.
It’s fitting then, with this anniversary, to reflect on and recognize a significant milestone: As of this writing,
100 equines have been aided by the Equine Protection Fund programs — 100 potential cases of starvation, displacement, and needless suffering were averted through charitable donations and the efforts of the Fund’s engaged
Volunteer Network.
However, numbers fail to convey a key value of an act of compassion, in that it can have a multiplier effect for all of New Mexico’s equine community. An example of this occurred in a feed assistance case from February. The applicant, facing temporary unemployment in the family, contacted the Fund about her motley crew of three horses and a mule, all adopted from situations of severe abuse. With the temporary help of Emergency Feed Assistance, these equines were able to continue rehabilitating—regaining trust for humans—without further traumatic uprooting and strain on New Mexico’s overtaxed equine shelters.
APNM and the Equine Protection Fund are most proud of cases such as this one, in which our programs offer resources to augment the life-saving work already being done by compassionate New Mexicans.
