Starving Valencia County Horse Rescued

Hiker Jacob Romero discovered an emaciated horse wandering the countryside east of Valencia County High School on Tuesday, August 12. He and his nephew stayed with the mare for hours, giving her water, as they waited for help to arrive. After three hours, they had to return home, and the mare tried to follow them.

The next morning, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office helicopter was dispatched to locate the horse, who seemed to have disappeared overnight. She was found eating wild berries in an arroyo. She was transported for veterinary care to Bomar Equine Rescue, where donations for the horse's care are being gratefully accepted.

Animal Protection of New Mexico is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the horse's owner. Anyone with information may call the Animal Cruelty Task Force hotline: 888-260-2178.
