NEW MEXICO UNVEILS SPAY-NEUTER LICENSE PLATE

Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM) hosted a news conference on Tuesday, June 27 at 10:30 am outside at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), 4595 San Mateo NE in Albuquerque, to announce the availability of New Mexico’s new spay-neuter license plate.  In 2003, Representative Irvin Harrison (D-Gallup) passed HB566, which authorized this license plate to be produced and sold.  Twenty-five dollars of each $37 license plate fee will be directed to spay and neuter programs in the counties in which the plates are sold.  Since 2003, the APNM staff has been working with DMV and others to have the plate designed and produced.  The stunning artwork was created by Josh Leach while he was a design student at Albuquerque’s Art Center Design College.

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, a staunch proponent of spaying and neutering of animals, led the news conference.  He emphasized how important it is that communities throughout the state get involved in the animal overpopulation crisis and work together to reduce euthanasia figures.  Albuquerque has the largest overpopulation problem, taking in an average of 800 animals each week, 30% of which come from surrounding communities.  Addressing Albuquerque’s problem will require cooperation from agencies throughout the state.

City Councilor Sally Mayer and Representative Harrison also spoke at the news conference about the role this new license plate can play in combating the annual euthanasia of tens of thousands of dogs and cats in New Mexico.

Since the new special plate will subsidize spaying and neutering and can help counties prevent the euthanasia of healthy animals, Torrance county animal control officers attended to articulate the need for this and other spay-neuter funding tools.

Like all special license plates, the plates must be ordered from the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)–forms to order the plates can be obtained from MVD offices or downloaded from their website at: http://www.state.nm.us/tax/forms/mvd/Mvd11249.pdf
