Hobbs’ New Animal Ordinance
Unanimously Approved
Community Bands Together for Animals
| |
Front page headlines like this are many months in the making! (Used with permission of Hobbs News-Sun.)
|
On November 2, Hobbs City Commissioners voted 7-0 to adopt a new, stronger animal ordinance, the result of countless hours of work by local law enforcement, civil servants and community advocates.
Animal Protection of New Mexico offered input on draft ordinances to the City Attorney’s office and advice to local animal advocates on building support. We celebrate the successful adoption of the ordinance and the meaningful changes it will make in the lives of animals in Hobbs!
Highlights include:
• prohibition of animal abandonment
• improved definition of “animal”
• prohibition of animal fighting and animal fighting paraphernalia
• language to support state sterilization law
• strengthened language on animal cruelty, including prohibition
of ear-cropping, de-barking and tail-docking by non-veterinarians
• strengthened language on persons holding breeder permits and litter permits
• ban on sale of cats and dogs in pet stores
• reduced cost spay/neuter program for elderly, disabled and low income;
discount spay/neuter certificates
• ban on direct point chaining
• strict, specific animal welfare language for a dog on a trolley system
• feral cat protection
• language to protect animals transported in vehicles
• clear care and maintenance section
• ban on animals as prizes
• ban on exhibition of wild animals
Our communities are safer and better places to live in when all animals are treated humanely.
Congratulations to Hobbs!

PetSmart Charities to Attempt 15,000 Placements
of Homeless Animals in Nationwide Adoption Event
November 13-15 • All PetSmart locations
An estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats turn up in U.S. animal shelters every year, and PetSmart Charities has tasked itself with helping to find good homes for more than 15,000 homeless animals across the country this weekend. The PetSmart event is called the “Holiday National Adoption Event,” which will take place November 13-15 at all PetSmart locations.
PetSmart tells APNM that Albuquerque-area PetSmart stores will welcome homeless animals currently under the care of at least 16 local animal organizations.
At APNM, we receive personal appeals for help in placing a few cats and/or dogs every week. The circumstances vary. Sometimes giving up furry family members is a wrenching decision that had to be made due to a caretaker’s illness or death. And with all of the animals being handed over to shelters due to economic reasons, it makes the re-homing of all homeless animals somewhat tougher than usual—especially for those who don’t understand why they are no longer with the people they love.
Think of the animals who would like a kind home for Christmas, and if you can, help make a cat’s or dog’s dream come true this weekend.
Thank you for that consideration.
