State Police Bust Up Valencia County
Cockfighting Ring Over Weekend

New Mexico State Police swarmed a large cockfighting ring in the Highland Meadows area of Valencia County on Saturday night on an area resident's tip. Police say that the cockfighters had lookouts, as approximately 30 vehicles sped away when police approached the scene.

APNM Legislative Director Heather Ferguson is also a member of the Attorney General's Animal Cruelty Task Force, and stated that the signs of fighting left behind at the site, including the gaffs that are strapped to the birds' ankles, are typical for a cockfight. Four roosters were found alive, and there were large black trash bags of dead and dying birds.

The owner of the building escaped with the rest of the cockfighters, but police are searching for him.

Since New Mexico outlawed cockfighting in 2007, all cockfighters potentially face felony charges of extreme cruelty to animals, or conspiracy to commit extreme cruelty to animals.

Los Lunas Dog Breeder Denies Responsibility
for Death of Puppy Suffering from Parasites

A grandmother wanted to give her granddaughter a Yorkshire Terrier puppy for Christmas, but instead took the puppy to a veterinarian when the puppy was having seizures every 10 to 20 minutes, according to a report on KOB Eyewitness News 4. The veterinarian found the puppy loaded with parasites, and suffering.

The puppy was euthanized.

The Los Lunas breeder whose operation produced the Yorkie, Judy Corbin, has been named in many complaints to Animal Protection of New Mexico.
