Animal Cruelty Task Force works to ensure
animal fighting not tolerated in New Mexico

Law enforcement agencies across New Mexico are stepping up their efforts to ensure that beautiful birds like this rooster are not subjected to the barbaric practice of cockfighting.

Animal Protection of New Mexico has been an active member of the Attorney General’s Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) since its inception early this summer. In this time, APNM has worked with local law enforcement agencies across the state, and most recently in Doña Ana County, on cases involving both dog and rooster fighting. The first case to which APNM lent its support was the high profile dog fighting case involving alleged dog fighters, Duron and Duryea Scott of El Paso. A total of fifty-eight pit bulls were seized from properties in Chaparral and in El Paso. While the brothers have claimed that they were merely running a breeding operation, evidence collected from the scenes led the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department to press several charges of dog fighting.

This past Sunday, following a raid on a property in Anthony, New Mexico, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department issued the state’s first charges of cockfighting under the 2007 ban on the practice. Seventy roosters were seized from the scene, as was cockfighting paraphernalia such as knives and the drugs used to condition roosters for fighting. A pit was also found on the property.

APNM applauds the hard work of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department and Doña Ana County Animal Control for their tireless and determined work to stop illegal animal fighting in their community. The Attorney General’s Animal Cruelty Taskforce will continue to lend its support to all other law enforcement agencies across the state as they work to combat animal fighting in their communities.

If you see any signs of animal fighting in your community, please contact the ACT toll-free statewide hotline at: 888-260-2178. Information will be kept confidential and rewards of up to $5,000 are being offered by the Humane Society of the United States for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those participating in animal fighting.
