Save the Chimps – Volunteer Opportunities
As you can imagine, caring for over 200 chimps–and converting a vivisection laboratory to a peaceful sanctuary–is a lot of work. Save the Chimps employs two-dozen caretakers to fulfill the chimps’ needs, but they often can use a little help. There are a number of ways you can help out, and that doesn’t mean you need to head for Alamogordo.
Volunteering at the Sanctuary:
If you are interested in volunteering at the sanctuary, please visit the Save the Chimps website at http://www.savethechimps.org/give_volunteer.asp to learn how.
Make Chimp Treats or Collect Toys
If you are located outside of Alamogordo, but still want to help, there are a variety of ways to do so! The chimpanzees love treats, toys and enrichment boxes, and we would love to get you started on having some work parties for them. For ideas on work parties, please contact our Chimpanzee Campaign Volunteer Cecilia Marquez at ceciliadesanmateo@hotmail.com or 319-4055.
Supplies for chimp work parties
Easy, cheap and accessible! To make goodies boxes we take empty boxes, put in shredded office paper (no newspaper), a COUPLE of treats, and then put that box in a larger box and do the same. With over 200 chimpanzees, we usually only have about 2 or 3 boxes per goodie, but you can do as many as you like!
The treats are very simple—unsweetened dried fruit (raisins, dates, etc), unsalted peanuts in the shell, unsweetened Cheerio-type cereal or unsalted pretzels.
And the only other supplies needed are shredded paper and boxes—anything from cereal boxes to the ones your allergy medicine comes in work. And we have members who are collecting boxes and paper, so if you are having a party and need supplies, please let us know so we can get them to you. Again, please contact Cecilia at ceciliadesanmateo@hotmail.com or 319-4055.
Please check out the wish list for the chimpanzees to see the other items, treats and toys they need, and then start collecting them in your community!
Help Transport the Treats
We need volunteers to drive collected items to Alamogordo, so if you have access to a sizable car (van, station wagon, SUV, pickup truck) please consider volunteering for this task.
